De stand van zaken

Vanmiddag is ze naar een ander ziekenhuis gebracht. Het eerste uur is ze rustig. Ze vraagt zich alleen vol verbazing af waarom ze nu al uren op het perron van het Centraal Station staat. Met bed en al.
Tegen middernacht was alles anders. Hartfalen, vocht in longen en weggegleden in een coma.
Terwijl wij met de arts de grens van ingrijpen bespraken, besloot het lichaam om nog maar niet bij de pakken neer te gaan zitten. Tegen de ochtend kon ze van de eerste apparaten worden losgekoppeld.

Haar kleine, oude hand nestelt zich in de mijne.
Ik kijk naar de botten, zichtbaar door de dunne huid. De paarsblauwe plekken van de infusen worden groter en donkerder.
Ik haal koffie. Als ik ga zitten, kijkt ze even op.
Een zachte blik die al gauw weer wegglijdt. Ze ademt zwaar.
Ik verschuif voorzichtig mijn stoel. Ze opent haar ogen.
‘Hoe is het met de politiek?’, vraagt ze met redelijk heldere stem.
Je wilt niet dat dit tere lichaam de definitieve optater krijgt door te vertellen hoe het er voor staat in dit land.
Ik lieg en zeg ‘goed’.
