Op 10 mei is het onmogelijke gebeurd. Nederland is in oorlog met Duitsland. Vijf dagen lang vochten de Nederlandse soldaten met grote heldenmoed, maar door de overmacht (luchtmacht en een miljoenenleger, zonder hulp van anderen) capituleerde Nederland na vijf dagen. Rotterdam werd nog op de laatste dag half verwoest, een wreed lot trof de stad. We moeten generaal Winkelman eeuwig dankbaar zijn dat hij Nederland niet liet vernietigen. Rhenen, de Grebbeberglinie, Breda, Wageningen en vooral Zeeland, waar de strijd dertien dagen duurde, dragen sporen van grote vernieling.

Ik kan niet schrijven, er is te veel gebeurd en mijn ziel is nog te bewogen, mijn ik nog te zeer uit balans om op te schrijven wat er in mij plaatsvindt, om mijn
gedachten te ordenen en ze in een vorm te gieten. Maar ik wil weer schrijven, misschien geeft het me rust.
