Buurvrouw

Als ik het zijstraatje inloop, herken ik het silhouet dat daar midden op straat staat.
Het is mijn vroegere buurvrouw in de blauwe regenjas die ze zo rond 1962 bij C&A heeft gekocht.
‘Dag buurvrouw’, zeg ik.
Ze kijkt op.
‘Zullen we maar naar de kant gaan?’, stel ik voor.
Ze knikt.
‘Dag buurman’, zegt ze als we op de stoep staan.
‘Hoe gaat het?’, vraag ik.
Ze kijkt naar de bruine envelop die ze in haar linkerhand heeft.
‘Ik kom net van de dokter. Ik heb de foto meegekregen.’
Ze maakt de envelop open.
‘De dokter zegt dat die grijze vlekken op de foto de plekken zijn waar mijn geheugen aangetast is.’
Ze houdt de foto omhoog.
‘Ik moet nu naar de specialist. Ziet u die gaten? Die zitten in mijn hoofd. Nu kan ik de verhuizing naar Bloemendaal wel vergeten. Daar willen ze me niet meer.’
‘Hebben ze dat gezegd?’, vraag ik.
‘Nee, maar dat kun je wel raden. Nou hoef ik daar toch niet meer naartoe, hoor. Dat wilde ik omdat een vriendin van me er woonde. Die is een maand geleden overleden. Zo maar.’
‘Ach’, zeg ik, ‘dat is ook wat.’
Buurvrouw schudt haar hoofd.
‘Nu willen ze me naar een verzorgingshuis hebben.’
Ze stopt de foto terug.
‘Misschien is het ook maar beter dat je alles vergeet’, zegt ze, ‘maak je je ook geen zorgen meer.’
Ik zie het voordeel. Toch ga ik op zoek naar goedbedoelde woorden.
Buurvrouw is me voor. ‘De dokter vindt dat ik zo niet mag denken. Ik moet positief blijven. Maar toen ik zei dat dat nu net in zo’n gat zat, zei ie niks meer.’
