But for what do I write diaries? A phantom. In the week of 15-18 December I destroyed my first diary, which I started in 1919. And that hurt me even more than the first ones, because at that time I was still a young woman of 35, had young children. Hans was 10 years old, Inge 7 and Sonja 3. I could still think young, had imagination, didn’t yet know anything about Hitler, what dangers he would bring us. And now I have destroyed the evidence of how I thought when I was 35 years old. Only this war diary remains until now, and who knows, perhaps I will have to burn it today or tomorrow, when danger lurks. What am I writing for then? But I have to do it, an inner voice drives me to it, perhaps it is the only thing left of me. A little talent to write down thoughts, a little memory, otherwise I am now more of a sloof than ever.
Sloof – Dutch expression for Flunkey.
